How to Clean Your Washing Machine in 5 Steps

Every household owns a washing machine these days. But the question is, does everyone know how to clean one?

Cleaning your washing machine is the easiest way to improve its lifespan. No matter if your machine is a top loader or front loader, these simple steps are sure to keep it well-cared for! The tools required are easily found in any home too.

You will need:

  1. Baking soda

  1. White vinegar

  1. Warm water

  1. A soft brush

  1. A microfiber cloth

If your washing machine is a top-loader:

Step 1: Soak your drum

Fill your empty washing machine with warm water. Make sure that the amount of water used is the same as what you would use while doing a large laundry.

Then, add 2 cups of white vinegar and 1/4 cup of baking soda. Allow it to soak for 2 hours.

Step 2: Scrub and wipe

While your washing machine is soaking away, it's time to give it a good wipe down. Spritz some white vinegar onto your microfiber cloth and wipe the front and sides. Don't forget the top and bottom of the washer lid, as well as any rubber gaskets you can find.

After that, focus on the detergent and fabric softener dispenser. Take your soft brush and start scrubbing away the soap scums. A toothbrush will definitely come in handy.

Don't forget the lint filter too! That's where all sorts of gunk will get clogged as well.

Step 3: Start the wash cycle

After all the scrubbing, wiping and soaking, start the wash cycle as usual. Let it run a complete cycle to remove the vinegar and baking soda solution.

Step 4: Fish out the scraps

When all is done, there will be scraps of mold at the bottom of the drum. Throw them away and you're one step away to your fresh and clean washing machine!

Step 5: The final check

Do a spot check on whether there are any stain remnants or foul scent. If there is, add another 1/4 cup of baking soda to your machine and run one more wash cycle. You will likely be going through this step if you haven't been cleaning your machine for a while.

If your washing machine is a front-loader :

Just switch Step 2 as your first step and Step 1 as your second step. Remember to clean your rubber gaskets well, as that is where mildew, mold and hair will get trapped. Then, follow the remaining 3 steps as usual.

Whether it's a top-loader or a front loader, remember to pop up the lid and let it air dry once you're done with cleaning. Your washing machine is now ready to tackle your next batch of laundry!
