Smart Way to Save Electricity During Ramadan

Ramadan without waste

Ramadan is a month that teaches us moderation, discipline, and gratitude for every blessing. However, without realizing it, household electricity usage often increases during this month, from preparing iftar meals, storing leftover food, to longer air conditioner usage during the day or night.

What if this Ramadan, we not only fast from food and drink, but also “fast” from energy waste?

Here are smart ways to save electricity while reducing your household carbon footprint throughout Ramadan.

Set Your Air Conditioner Temperature Wisely

Hot weather and more active nights often lead to increased air conditioner usage during Ramadan.

For more efficient use:

  • Set the temperature between 24–26°C
  • Use the timer function after sahur
  • Clean the air filter before Ramadan begins
  • Use a fan to help circulate cool air

Did you know? Increasing the temperature by just 1°C can reduce energy consumption by up to 10–15%.

This small step not only lowers your electricity bill but also reduces carbon emissions caused by excessive energy use.

Prevent Your Refrigerator from Working Too Hard

Ramadan is often associated with increased food and beverage storage. However, an overloaded refrigerator or extremely low temperature settings can cause the compressor to work harder.

Practice these habits:

  • Refrigerator temperature: 3–5°C
  • Freezer temperature: -18°C
  • Organize food properly to allow good air circulation
  • Avoid leaving the door open for too long before iftar

Smart food management not only saves energy but also helps reduce food waste — a global issue that significantly impacts the environment.

Use Your Washing Machine More Efficiently

Cooking activities and family gatherings often increase laundry loads during Ramadan.

To save energy:

  • Wash full loads
  • Use eco mode
  • Choose cold water washing
  • Dry clothes under sunlight

Did you know? A large portion of a washing machine’s energy is used to heat water. By choosing cold water, you can significantly reduce energy consumption.

Reduce Food and Energy Waste

Ramadan is also a time when food waste tends to increase due to excessive purchasing.

Smart tips:

  • Plan a weekly menu
  • Store leftovers properly
  • Use airtight containers
  • Reheat food efficiently

Reducing food waste means lowering carbon emissions from food production and disposal.

Ramadan & Our Responsibility to the Environment

Ramadan is about self-control. With small steps such as setting the right temperature, managing food wisely, and using home appliances efficiently, we can create a meaningful impact on the environment.

This Ramadan, let us not only fast from food and drink — but also fast from energy waste.

Small Actions, Big Impact. 🌱
